Week 9 as a Level 1 Nursing Student

Monday's communications class was pretty challenging. We split the class into two groups and there were actual actors there pretending to have emotional breakdowns. We went up one by one to talk with the actor but it was as though it was a continuation of one conversation, but we all went separately and just took over from where the last person left off. I hope that made sense. Anyway, it was hard...talking to ppl is a lot harder than it seems! You kind of have to probe delicately and offer what they could possibly be feeling without pushing them too far and closing them off. If you think you're good at talking to ppl (like I used to think), think again!!

Pathophysiology class is ever interesting. We're learning about tumours and cancer. It's funny cuz I thought that this was going to be my weakest class but it's definitely surprised/impressed me. Maybe I'll feel otherwise soon. Until then, I'm going to enjoy our relationship.

We finally got to go to the hospital on Tuesday and boy was it ever great. We were on mornings so our shift started at 0700, so I was up bright and early at 0545. The day was pretty awesome, I gave my very first sponge bath!! So here's something for you to keep in mind, never make assumptions! I went in, woke my patient up, and asked if she would like to brush her teeth. Do you know what she said to me? I don't have any! I was super embarrassed. She just laughed, but I was beet red. Never assume! Hahaha. The day ended great and unfortunately, we didn't get to go to clinical on Wednesday morning. But not before everyone left their houses and were en route to the hospital at 0600! Our carpool group just ended going to IHOP for breakfast since we were already up. Haha. But even IHOP wasn't open yet...talk about heartbreak! Haha. I wasn't nearly as disappointed as I normally would be because of the cancelled clinical this week cuz of the eventful day I had on Tuesday.

This week, everyone was talking about all the assignments that are coming up and we were just assigned a tonne of presentations...so everyone's pretty stressed, I guess. I knew all these things were coming up, but I guess it just stresses ME out when everyone else stresses out. It's that whole group think thing. But I just need to get organized, which I've spent today doing. It's just a matter of making lists, for me, at least. So I'm feeling great.

Fewf...that was a long one! Back to my presentation on Emotional Intelligence!
